QS-9000

This quality assurance program for suppliers was created jointly by DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, and Ford. It replaced separate standards required by each automaker. Seemingly, QS-9000 will come to an end in December 2006, as the Big 3 have moved to ISO/TS 16949.

Although QS-9000 has proven to be an excellent management tool, there are no current plans to update this standard in line with ISO 9001:2000. ISO/TS 16949:2002, written in line with ISO 9001:2000, is set to replace QS-9000 as the Quality Management System specification for the automotive industry.

QS-9000, Third Edition, was issued in March 1998. The ISO 9001:1994 forms the basic management system requirements. This edition of ISO 9001 will become invalid December 15, 2003.

Where do I go from here?
For third party certification, you need to implement an effective quality system complying with the requirements. The first step is to get on the road to certification.

For a list of deadlines, please proceed to transition or download the Guide to automotive manufacturer's position on ISO/TS 16949 under "related info" on the right.
