The CO2QUALSTORE guideline allows those directly involved in the implementation and permitting of individual CO2 storage projects to establish agreement on the issues involved in each case. This is likely to include individual project developers and local authorities, as well as regulators and policy makers, at national and international level.
The CO2QUALSTORE guideline provides a transparent basis for discussion and decision-making between these bodies, helping set performance targets that will enable the granting of relevant permits for individual sites, including for exploration, storage and transfer of responsibility.
Project developers are provided with:
- A transparent basis for examination and decision-making to meet internal milestones and decision gates
- Guide to set performance targets that will enable the granting of relevant permits for individual sites, including permits for exploration, storage and transfer of responsibility
- Predictable operating conditions and consistency and efficiency in project development based on regulatory frameworks, best engineering practice and best available technology.
Regulators and national authorities are provided with:
- Guide to verify that sites have been selected and assessed suitable for geological storage of CO2 following a standardized procedure
- Standardized reference for permitting and independent verification
- A technical basis for development of national regulations for storage of CO2 aligned with industry best practice and other national regulations.
