DNV's transparent and independent approach to verification, certification, quality surveillance and marine operations assures that an activity, product, facility or service is in compliance with specified requirements of owners, authorities and other stakeholders, thereby ensuring a successful project and safe operations in-service.
Regulatory authorities across the world have moved or are moving from a traditional prescriptive regime to a goal-setting regime with functional requirements where safety must be demonstrated based on risk considerations. DNV’s transparent and fully independent approach to verification, certification, quality surveillance and marine operations will help reduce and manage risks, thereby ensuring a successful project and safe operations in-service.
Our approach
DNV’s Risk-Based Verification (RBV) method is a structured, systematic process, using risk and cost-benefit analysis to strike a balance between technical and operational issues and between safety and costs. It ensures that an appropriate focus is directed at high-risk elements, making verification less subjective and arbitrary. DNV is the first organisation to introduce a risk-based approach. This method is documented and completely transparent. The details of the approach are described in the DNV Service Specification DNV-OSS300, Risk-Based Verification.
A number of more detailed verification specifications for specific assets such as structures, pipelines, topside equipment, lifting appliances, etc. are available, each containing specific verification/certification work scope and recommended detailed checklists.

The financial and technical consequences of an accident, or an unexpected occurrence during temporary phases involving offshore marine operations, can be devastating. This fact alone emphasises the importance of having a well-defined marine operations verification scope, a recognised technical reference, competence and experience, and quality of service.
