Boat framed by an iceberg portal: In a part of the world where infrastructure is minimal, we were dependent on our own boat to be able to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Being self-sufficient gave us the freedom and opportunity to conduct detailed scientific research in areas seldom explored.

“DNV made a lasting impression on me when I did my Master’s thesis in Maritime Engineering here just over a decade ago. So to be back at DNV after gaining several years of Arctic research and exploration experience feels right. Especially now that the Arctic looks set to open up, which requires independent organisations like DNV to act as a bridge between operators and academics,” says Knut Espen, a senior researcher with DNV Research and Innovation.

Mr Solberg has recently joined a ten-strong team of experts in DNV Research and Innovation. The team is working on several climate change projects; exploring how Arctic shipping will be affected by climate change in the near term and up to 2030. DNV Research and Innovation is also developing a Recommended Practice for Ice Effects on Arctic Offshore Platforms, both floating and fixed.
