A major milestone was reached by DNV’s offshore classification service when the drillship Discoverer Clear Leader was delivered to the customer by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea in March.

The Discoverer Clear Leader is the first of five similar vessels built to DNV class at Daewoo’s shipyard in Korea. The series represents the most modern technology for drilling in ultra-deep waters and includes the latest advances in dynamic positioning as well as extended drilling capabilities. The vessel can drill wells 40,000 feet deep, including 12,000 feet of water depth.

The occasion was marked by handing over a plaque illustrating the Discoverer Clear Leader to Mike Hall, vice president of Newbuilds in Transocean.

“This unit marks the beginning of an exciting new era at Transocean – and we are targeting world-class performance,” says Mike Hall.

“Transocean’s newbuild rigs, all of which will feature the industry’s most advanced technological solutions to date, are being constructed at various shipyards in Asia – with the majority of construction taking place in South Korea, currently the world’s leading shipbuilding nation.”
