DNV's vision for a safe and sustainable future has been followed up by concrete actions by employees in Australia. They have participated in several projects to make their contribution to a more sustainable future; The Clean Up Australia Day, Earth Hour 2009, and not least with Engineers Without Borders Australia.
Participating in the Clean Up Australia Day
Australians are among the highest producers of waste in the world. In an attempt to reduce this waste, over 630,000 volunteers across Australia took part in the yearly Clean Up Australia Day at nearly 7000 sites across the nation. The event is one of many simple and easy actions individuals can take part in to protect the local and global environment.

The successful event was an enjoyable outing for everyone and has become a regular annual event where all employees and families are invited to participate and make a difference.
Earth Hour 2009
The Earth Hour in March of this year was the most successful Earth Hour since the annual event began. Millions of people across 88 countries switched off their lights and demonstrated their concern at how our climate is changing. The symbolic flip of a switch is meant to send a powerful message to our political leaders and DNV Australia joined in on the action towards a more sustainable planet. All lights and electrical equipment were turned off at the end of business on the Friday before Earth Hour and they stayed off until the Monday morning. DNV employees also took action in their own homes by turning off light switches and electrical equipment during the hour.
Earth Hour is an initiative that was started in 2007 to encourage people to make small changes in their lives to create a change of habits in the long term as well as to spur conversations on climate change amongst people.
Engineers Without Borders Australia
In order to help people in need around the globe, we need to become more socially aware and responsible. Engineers Without Borders Australia is an initiative which was started in 2003 by a small group of engineers from Melbourne who wished to do something different with their engineering to help developing communities. They want to inspire others to take action towards helping disadvantaged people and their quality of life through education and the implementation of sustainable engineering projects.
Their ultimate objective of sustainable development includes goals to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and to make knowledge and technologies on sustainable living accessible to all. Engineers Without Borders Australia also works continuously to develop and maintain global partnerships to reach these goals.
