Water Efficiency Labelling (WELS)
WELS is Australia’s water efficiency labelling scheme, which allows consumers to compare the water efficiency of different products
Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme – WELS requires certain products to be registered and labelled with their water efficiency. Since 1 July 2006, water efficiency labelling for water related fixtures and appliances has been mandatory.
Under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme (WELS) all toilets, showerheads, taps, clothes washers and dishwashers are registered and rated in accordance with Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS6400:2005 and must be labelled to show their water efficiency before they may be supplied for sale in Australia.
The primary objective of the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme is to promote the use of water efficient products by enabling consumers to clearly identify and purchase them with the full confidence that the performance and integrity of those products has not been compromised due to their reduced water usage and that the product is fully warranted by the manufacturer.

The Label Shows
- Zero to six-star rating that allows a quick comparative assessment of the product’s water efficiency
- A figure relating to the water consumption/flow rate of the product, based on laboratory tests
